For international students, UKRI funding covers fees at the UK rate, the stipend and an RTSG, and the University of Cambridge waives the difference between the international and home fee, so they are also fully funded. How to apply

These required steps were checked against official details for this cycle.

  1. Browse the available topics and supervisors, identify preferred topics and supervisors, and prioritize alternatives. For DLA funding, include at least one proposed subject area within the NERC remit; apply to the course for your top-priority project. Required
  2. Contact prospective supervisors to discuss mutual interests and seek advice before applying; this is strongly advised, not stated as mandatory. Optional
  3. If preferred supervisors do not respond or you are uncomfortable approaching them directly, email the DLA administrator for help finding an academic contact. Optional
  4. Apply through the University Applicant Portal to the PhD course relevant to your first-choice supervisor. The course application is used both for the department's admission decision and for consideration for DLA and other Cambridge funding. Required
  5. In the application, select a Michaelmas Term 2027 start (01-Oct-2027); indicate that you wish to apply for funding and answer yes to applying to the NERC Doctoral Landscape Award section. List CREATES DLA topics and supervisors in priority order, and provide the 250-word summary of your research interests in the NERC remit. Complete the other course and application questions as instructed. Required
  6. You are encouraged to complete the Cambridge Trust and Gates Cambridge sections if you wish to be considered for additional funding; earlier deadlines may apply. Optional
  7. Arrange the two references well in advance and submit all supporting documentation, including references, by the deadline for your first-choice course. The Applicant Portal supports reference requests and document uploads. Required
