How to apply
The application information below summarizes the captured scholarship source. Review the provider page before submitting.
- Embassy Recommendation route (except applicants in China): contact the appropriate Japanese diplomatic mission in your country for its requirements and submit the MEXT application there for the initial screening. Required
- Alternative for applicants in China: submit the application through China's Ministry of Education for the first screening; contact your home university or the China Scholarship Council for the applicable requirements, schedule, and process. Required
- For research-student applicants seeking a Kyoto University Letter of Provisional Acceptance, after passing the first screening obtain the Passing Certificate of the First Screening from the Japanese diplomatic mission. Required
- For that research-student route, select a prospective academic advisor whose research fits your interests. Then use either the AAO online process in steps S5–S8 or the direct-contact alternative in S9 to contact the advisor and request a Letter of Provisional Acceptance. Required
- AAO alternative: sign up for the AAO online application system by registering your email address. Required
- Complete AAO registration by accessing the URL sent in the registration email. Required
- Complete the AAO application form, enter the required information, upload the required documents, and submit the form. Follow any correction instructions if AAO reports that the application is incomplete. Required
- If the AAO outcome is positive, contact the prospective supervisor directly and request the Letter of Provisional Acceptance. A positive AAO outcome permits contact with the supervisor; it is not itself an offer of provisional acceptance. Required
- Alternative to the AAO process: contact the prospective advisor directly or through the graduate school/research institute administrative office and request the Letter of Provisional Acceptance. For an email request, use the subject line “<MEXT: Embassy Recommendation> Application for a Letter of Provisional Acceptance”. Required
- After receiving a Letter of Provisional Acceptance, apply separately to Kyoto University as well as pursuing the scholarship application. Applicants seeking a master's, doctoral, or professional-degree program must pass the entrance examination conducted by the relevant graduate school; consult that school's guidelines for its application procedure and period. Required
- Alternative route: for University Recommendation (Special Selection), apply for and obtain admission to an eligible special program before scholarship consideration. Required
- After admission to an eligible special program, the program selects scholarship candidates and Kyoto University nominates candidates to MEXT; MEXT makes the final scholarship selection. Required
- Deadline
- Deadline unconfirmed
- Deadline notes
- Application timing varies by programme or category; the page lists “Around April – May,” “Varies by program,” “Around December,” and “Around February.” For research students seeking a Kyoto University Letter of Provisional Acceptance after passing the first screening, requests are accepted through 1 September 2026 (JST); some graduate schools may close earlier. The page also contains an earlier reference to 1 September 2025 for some graduate schools.
