How to apply
These required steps were checked against official details for this cycle.
- Check with your local Mitacs Advisor to confirm whether the project fits your institution’s funding requirements and request the link to the GRA Application Portal; the process may vary by Canadian university and internship-unit allocation. Required
- Review Mitacs’s eligibility and award guidelines and those of the Canadian institution. Required
- Identify a home and host academic supervisor, then connect with one another to discuss project interests; Mitacs does not match interns with supervisors. Required
- Before preparing the application, the academic supervisor at the Canadian institution must obtain endorsement from that institution; contact the local Mitacs Advisor for information about the university’s endorsement rules and process. Required
- Complete the portal application fields and submit the research proposal and Mitacs Pre-Departure form. Each supervisor and intern must log in and enter their own personal information, answer their own research-security question, and then log in again to sign off on the completed project. Required
- Obtain the required Canadian university signatures: the Vice President Research (VPR) or designate signature is required for the Allocation stream but not the Quantum stream; an Office of Research Services (ORS) or designate signature is required for applications in either stream. Allow 1–3 weeks for the signatures. Required
- Submit the complete application through the portal 12–16 weeks before the project start date. Only a local Mitacs Advisor, a Canadian-institution academic supervisor, or the intern who created the application may submit it; all participants receive a confirmation email after submission. Required
- Deadline
- Rolling
- Deadline notes
- Mitacs recommends applying at least 16 weeks before the planned start date; application instructions also say to submit the complete application 12–16 weeks before the project start date. Outcome letters are typically issued 10–12 weeks after submission.
- Application cycle
- Rolling applications
- Notes
- The application process may vary by Canadian university and internship-unit allocation. Applicants should contact a local Mitacs Advisor to determine fit and request the GRA Application Portal link. Projects must begin within one year of the outcome letter; interns cannot travel until Mitacs issues both an outcome and award letter.
